Field establishment follows practices similar to those for small grains, with drilling into a firm, moist seedbed once soil temperature reaches about eight to ten degrees Celsius. Seeding rates for cannabis sativa hemp seeds depend on the end use, ranging from roughly twenty kilograms per hectare for grain crops to forty or more for fiber, where dense stands produce taller, thinner stems. Shallow sowing at two to three centimeters gives the most even emergence. Weed pressure drops quickly once the canopy closes.
